Mattancherry Palace (Dutch Palace) – A Timeless Legacy of Royal Grandeur

In the heart of Kochi (Cochin) lies a majestic blend of Kerala’s royal heritage and colonial influence — the Mattancherry Palace, also known as the Dutch Palace. With its stunning murals, grand architecture, and centuries of history, this palace offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into the life and legacy of the Cochin royal family.
A Palace Gifted by Foreign Hands
Built around 1555 CE by the Portuguese as a gift to the Raja of Cochin, the palace was later renovated by the Dutch in 1663 — earning it the name “Dutch Palace.” Despite its European name, the palace beautifully showcases traditional Kerala architectural style (Nālukettu), complete with sloping roofs, wooden interiors, and intricate carvings.
A Museum of Art and Heritage
Today, the Mattancherry Palace serves as a museum, preserving the rich history of the Cochin kings. The walls are adorned with exquisite 16th-century murals depicting scenes from Ramayana, Mahabharata, and other Hindu legends — painted in natural vegetable dyes and considered among the finest in India.
Visitors can explore royal artifacts such as ceremonial robes, palanquins, swords, coins, and portraits, offering a glimpse into the grandeur of Kerala’s royal era. The central courtyard houses the Pazhayannur Bhagavati Temple, the royal family’s deity, surrounded by shrines dedicated to Lord Krishna and Lord Shiva.
