Nestled deep within the Brahmagiri Hills of Wayanad, surrounded by emerald forests and gurgling mountain streams, stands the ancient and revered Thirunelli Temple — often called the “Kashi of the South.” Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, this temple is a timeless spiritual sanctuary where nature and divinity blend seamlessly.

Set against the tranquil backdrop of the Western Ghats, Thirunelli Temple is not only a place of worship but also a destination that radiates peace, spirituality, and natural beauty — making it a must-visit for pilgrims and travelers alike.

A Temple Blessed by the Creator

According to legend, Lord Brahma himself installed the idol of Lord Vishnu (Thirunelli Perumal) here, impressed by the beauty of the spot and its divine aura. The name Thirunelli is derived from “nelli” (Indian gooseberry), as the temple was discovered amidst Amla trees, considered sacred in Hindu tradition.

This ancient temple, believed to be over a thousand years old, is mentioned in several Puranas and ancient texts. It’s one of the few temples where devotees can perform rituals for ancestors (Bali Tharpanam), similar to the rites at Varanasi (Kashi) — earning it the title “Kashi of the South.”
