Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary – Kerala’s Untamed Wilderness Awaits

Nestled in the lush embrace of the Western Ghats, the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is a paradise for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts. Spread over 344 square kilometers, this biodiverse sanctuary is one of the largest and most scenic protected areas in Kerala, forming part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve — a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, dense forests, rolling hills, and abundant wildlife come together to create an unforgettable experience in the heart of nature.
A Haven for Wildlife and Nature
Established in 1973, the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is home to a rich variety of flora and fauna, including tigers, elephants, leopards, gaurs, sambar deer, and Malabar giant squirrels. The sanctuary also shelters over 200 species of birds, making it a haven for birdwatchers.
Divided into four ranges — Muthanga, Tholpetty, Kurichiat, and Sulthan Bathery — the sanctuary connects with Bandipur (Karnataka) and Mudumalai (Tamil Nadu) wildlife reserves, allowing animals to roam freely across vast forested landscapes.
