Day 1: Chennai → Mahabalipuram (60 km / 1.5 hrs)(No meal)
On arrival at Chennai Airport, you will travel about 60 km (1.5 hours) along the scenic East Coast Road to reach Mahabalipuram. The day will be spent exploring the UNESCO-listed Shore Temple, the monolithic Five Rathas, and the magnificent stone carvings at Arjuna’s Penance. In the evening, you will attend a live demonstration on stone sculpture and carving techniques before staying overnight in Mahabalipuram.
Day 2: Mahabalipuram → Kanchipuram (70 km / 2 hrs) → Thanjavur (280 km / 6 hrs)(B)
After breakfast, you will drive 70 km (2 hours) to Kanchipuram, the City of a Thousand Temples. Here, you will visit Mamallapuram, a town in Chengalpattu district in the southeastern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, before continuing to a silk weaving centre to learn about the art of weaving Kanchipuram silk sarees. In the afternoon, you will continue the journey 280 km (about 6 hours) to Thanjavur, where you will check in to your hotel and stay overnight.
Day 3: Thanjavur Sightseeing → Madurai (190 km / 4.5 hrs)(B)
In the morning, you will visit the UNESCO World Heritage site Brihadeeswarar Temple, also known as the Big Temple, an architectural masterpiece of the Chola dynasty. Students will also attend an educational session on bronze casting and mural painting in a local artisan village. In the afternoon, you will drive 190 km (around 4.5 hours) to Madurai. The evening will be dedicated to a guided heritage walk at the Meenakshi Amman Temple to learn about the highlights of Dravidian temple architecture before staying overnight in Madurai.
Day 4: Madurai → Trichy (130 km / 3 hrs) OR Madurai → Chennai (450 km / 7.5 hrs)(B)
On the final day, you will attend a morning educational session on temple town culture and rituals in Madurai. If time allows, you may also visit the Thirumalai Nayak Palace, a 17th-century Indo-Saracenic marvel. Afterwards, you will proceed for departure either with a 130 km (3 hours) drive to Trichy Airport for your onward flight, or with a longer return journey of 450 km (about 7.5 hours) back to Chennai.
